Morning Prayer | Easter 4

OPENING SENTENCES

Alleluia! Christ is risen.
The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Christ has entered, not into a sanctuary made with hands, a copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.    Hebrews 9:24

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Silence for reflection

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Lord, open our lips. *
And our mouths shall proclaim your praise!

Alleluia. The Lord is risen indeed: Come let us adore him. Alleluia.

MORNING PSALM

Psalm 50

The LORD, the God of gods, has spoken; *
he has called the earth from the rising of the sun to
its setting.

Out of Zion, perfect in its beauty, *
God reveals himself in glory.

Our God will come and will not keep silence; *
before him there is a consuming flame,
and round about him a raging storm.

He calls the heavens and the earth from above *
to witness the judgment of his people.

"Gather before me my loyal followers, *
those who have made a covenant with me
and sealed it with sacrifice."

Let the heavens declare the rightness of his cause; *
for God himself is judge.

Hear, O my people, and I will speak:
"O Israel, I will bear witness against you; *
for I am God, your God.

I do not accuse you because of your sacrifices; *
your offerings are always before me.

I will take no bull-calf from your stalls, *
nor he-goats out of your pens;

For all the beasts of the forest are mine, *
the herds in their thousands upon the hills.

I know every bird in the sky, *
and the creatures of the fields are in my sight.

If I were hungry, I would not tell you, *
for the whole world is mine and all that is in it.

Do you think I eat the flesh of bulls, *
or drink the blood of goats?

Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving *
and make good your vows to the Most High.

Call upon me in the day of trouble; *
I will deliver you, and you shall honor me."

But to the wicked God says: *
Why do you recite my statutes,
and take my covenant upon your lips;

Since you refuse discipline, *
and toss my words behind your back?

When you see a thief, you make him your friend, *
and you cast in your lot with adulterers.

You have loosed your lips for evil, *
and harnessed your tongue to a lie.

You are always speaking evil of your brother *
and slandering your own mother's son.

These things you have done, and I kept still, *
and you thought that I am like you."

"I have made my accusation; *
I have put my case in order before your eyes.

Consider this well, you who forget God, *
lest I rend you and there be none to deliver you.

Whoever offers me the sacrifice of thanksgiving
honors me; *
but to those who keep in my way will I show
the salvation of God."

Heavenly Father, because Jesus your servant became obedient to death, his sacrifice was greater than all the holocausts of old. Accept the sacrifice of praise we offer you through him, and help us show the effects of it in our lives by striving to do your will, until our whole life becomes adoration in spirit and truth; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning
is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

MORNING LESSONS

For those not receiving Evening Prayer emails, the lectionary OT & NT Lessons for today are Psalms 89:20-29; Colossians 2:8-23.

Luke 6:39-49

He also told them a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully qualified will be like the teacher. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye. “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you? I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.”

CONCLUDING PRAYER

In the morning, pray for:

  • the day and its tasks

  • the world and its needs

  • the Church and her life

Conclude with the Lord's Prayer and/or the following Collect for the Fourth Week of Easter:

O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people; Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord. *
Thanks be to God!
