a life of faith
"Idolatry as it is understood in the Bible and as it is practiced in our culture does not mean just a simple-minded belief that some ancient wood carving or some current product of Detroit or Tokyo assembly lines is itself ultimate reality. Rather, it means that giving our ultimate attention and devotion to anything finite and fabricated is, at best, stupid. At worst it is self-destructive."
— Marianne H. Micks, The Joy of Worship
This quote will begin our worship at City Church this week. It is meant to prepare our hearts, engage our minds, and restore our hope that God has entered our world in Jesus to redeem it in all of its modern complexity, brokenness and promise.
What does it mean to be a Christian?
The Apostle Paul made the bold claim that "if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!" (2 Corinthians 5.17). In the risen Jesus, God gives us eyes us to see the world as he does and engages us together on a journey of lasting renewal.
The scriptures tell the story of God sending Jesus as Messiah, or savior, to show us what it means to live a truly human life. Jesus lived the life that we should live and died in order that we would be drawn back to God, to know his love and forgiveness in community. The risen Jesus unites us to himself and to one another by his Spirit, drawing us into his mission of renewal. A Christian imagines these possibilities, admits our need for new life, and trusts that God graciously gives them by faith in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
There is much more beauty, intimacy and nuance to this good news. It is a story which is not just to be understood, but experienced. So whether you are skeptical of faith, investigating Christianity, or have already begun seeking a life formed by God, we invite you to worship with us, connect with one of our communities, or serve our city with us as we seek to live out the mission of Jesus together.
Our hope is that you might find him among us.
